What is WAKE LESS? 12/11/2011

Binge Culture call it “a surreal cocktail of live performance, sound and interactive technologies, where the stage is everywhere and the audience are the action”

John Smythe from Theatreview called it an “invigorating subversion of theatrical conventions..."The prosaic, sublime, ridiculous and magical interweave as the 90-minute theatrical journey transports us to other climes and states of being... it may well be worth a random second visit. Meanwhile, book your first visit now."”

Lynn Freeman from the Capital Times said "Binge Culture Collective has always pushed the envelope, never more so than with this work. It plays with the theatre conventions, smashing down the third wall and taking audience participation to a whole new level."

Book now and find out for yourself what WAKE LESS is!

Our new show, made as part of STAB 2011, opens on November 11.

In WAKE LESS, we've explored the use of mask- something we've wanted to do for ages.  We're seeing what we can make of the meeting between the simplicity of this form, and the roughness that Binge has explored in the past. It's an exciting contrast and a great challenge. We've also collaborated with AV designers from Interrupt Collective, which has added a whole new texture to the show.

WAKE LESS features Simon Haren, who has been in every Binge show, and Izzy McKinnnon, who's collaborating with us for the first time.  We're including the audience and drawing attention to the event of theatre and entertainment  itself- places we go to put reality out our mind. It's a twisty, unpredictable, funny piece and we can't wait to share it!

You can book by emailling book@BATS.co.nz, or by phoning BATS on (04) 802 4175. See you there!

Ralph

6 Little Plays For Christchurch

We are stoked to be one of the 6 Little Plays For Christchurch (Facebook it) on at BATS for just 3 nights from 18 - 20 August, with two shows on the Saturday evening. It's 6 ten-minute plays all written and directed by local Wellington theatre makers, and all the proceeds go to supporting the Christchurch earthquake relief through Red Cross.

Binge Culture's little play is this project is called Work In Progress, and showcases some of the techniques we've been exploring for our upcoming show, Wake Less. Wake Less is on at BATS from 11 - 19 November as part of STAB 2011. It will be playful and chaotic, a surreal cocktail of performance, visuals, lighting and sound. There might be a priest, you might get a tickle. Whatever happens, you can guarantee it'll be new, bizarre, and fun.

Come along to 6 Little Plays For Christchurch for a taster of what's to come for Binge Culture, to support local theatre, and of course, to support Christchurch

Here's what's happening in the world of Binge for the rest of the year!

Friday 1 July 1pm - 4pm
We're really excited to present a workshop as part of Playmarket's WHOSE SCENE IS IT ANYWAY? We'll be exploring autobiography, storytelling and audience engagement as it relates to our experience as an emerging company. Its fantastic to be the "unknowns" in such a great weekend, with other workshops being led by the likes of Justin Lewis and Jo Randerson. Cost is a very reasonable $10 a head, you can register here.

Thursday, August 18- Saturday August 20 8pm Having had such a great time at The Peek Party back in January, we're presenting ten minutes of exploratory material towards our new show in 6 Little Plays For Christchurch at BATS.  Again, we're in great company.

25th-25th August
Soundtrack to the Daily Grind is an interdisciplinary approach to music being performed at the Christchurch Arts Festival 2011.

November
Our new show, inspired by dreams and explored through mask and light, will be presented as part of the 2011 STAB season.

New work at BATS, late 2011 20/04/2011

Binge Culture decends into work on a new show at BATS, to be performed later on this year. The working title is "Dream the Dark," and its going to be totally down the rabbit hole.

We're using dreams as a source, and looking back at physical theatre masters for inspiration and working methods. Who knows quite where we'll end up this time, but one thing is for sure - if you've seen anything like it, we'll give you a mars bar. Directed By Joel Baxendale, produced by Claire O'Loughlin.

Two more Rugged Beauty Reviews 16/03/2011

"This Rugged Beauty is a deliberately curious little number. You never quite know what is going on with the love story,  When you close your eyes, as instructed, you may end up a bit damp or wind blown or even holding a plant. Hugely original and the last scene with the whales is strangely affecting." Lynn Freeman

"Inspired by a visit to Te Papa and thoughts of what it is to be a New Zealander, the cast have created a stimulating 80 minutes in which the best moments are spoken ones: New Zealanders’ propensity to be positive (we’ll pull through), the inability to fully express an emotional response, and the need to be bossed about a bit which is brilliantly shown when the director tells the actors playing Judy and David to pull up their socks and act better after the oranges at half-time." Laurie Atkinson

Great first review of This Rugged Beauty from John Smythe on theatreview.org.nz

"Powerfully judged to evoke pride, embarrassment or both...there is a sense of deep attachment, of love, for all these things that distinguish our Kiwi identity. Presented in the Fringe as “an exploration” the company wishes to “develop and grow”, This Rugged Beauty already stands proud on the slopes of a metaphorical Mount Aspiring."
